General Disposition And Personality
The Poodles temperament is without a doubt one of the breeds best qualities. Their good nature, intelligence and self-assured attitude are why the Poodle is and has been such a popular companion.
The breed standard defines temperament as:
The Poodle has about him an air of distinction and dignity peculiar to himself. Carrying himself proudly, very active and intelligent.
Buying your poodle from a reputable breeder is the best way to make sure your puppy has a sound temperament. Although, basic temperament may be pre-determined by genetics, socialization plays a big role in shaping your poodles personality.
The poodle is a happy and affectionate dog that needs human companionship. Devoted and highly sensitive to their owner, the poodle seems able to "read" situations (your voice, hands, body, and emotions), anticipate every move and respond accordingly.
The intelligence poodles possess allow them to create games and amusements for themselves. In the book, The Intelligence Of Dogs by Stanley Coren, the poodle ranked second (behind the border collie) in terms of intelligence and trainability.
Your poodle might naturally be so well behaved you don't feel the need to train her. Training provides important mental stimulation and will strengthen the bond between you and your poodle.
What Went Wrong?
Sometimes, all the attention you give to your poodle can backfire and he becomes so attached to you that he can't be comfortable when you're not around. It's important to give your poodle puppy some time alone so he will learn being alone is okay. Be sure to leave interactive or treat filled toys to give him something to do.
Most often, problems like over-attachment (separation anxiety), shyness, fearfulness and aggression are caused by poor breeding and the lack of or improper socialization.
Some people breed dogs just to make money. Unethical breeders, oblivious to any temperament and genetic health problems the parent dogs may carry, churn out carelessly bred puppies. Ill-bred poodles can be high strung, fearful, aggressive or neurotic.
Most pet stores get puppies from commercial breeders. Breeding stock are often overbred without adequate health care, nutrition and exercise. Puppies are taken away from their mother too early and transported in less than ideal conditions. Unless the puppy is sold right away, they languish in a cage. Isolated, without the human companionship and mental stimulation they need.
Perhaps, you have adopted a poodle from an animal shelter. There are many reasons a dog may end up in a shelter. Occasionally legal action against a puppy mill or abusive owner result in the confiscation of poodles. Sometimes a poodle becomes lost or is given up due to a tragedy in the family, but most are victims of neglect and ignorance.
Poodles that have been mishandled require special care and attention. Socialization is doubly important, but has to be done more carefully and slowly. Don't ask more of your poodle than she can handle. Given time, patience, gentle training and love, such dogs can blossom into a great companions.
